Emmy Predictions 2012: Variety, Music or Comedy categories

The Primetime Emmy Awards are coming this Sunday, Sept. 23rd. ABC will be airing them with Jimmy Kimmel as the host. Every day this week I’ll be giving my predictions in every category. First up, the Variety categories.

Best Variety, Music or Comedy Series:
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Real Time with Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live

WILL WIN: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
SHOULD WIN: The Colbert Report

It’s going to be 10 years in a row for The Daily Show. It’s won this award for the best 9 years and based on it’s win last week for Writing, it’s going add another trophy to the mantle. And it absolutely deserves. It’s relevant and one of the best executed shows on television. It would be nice to see it switch up every once in a while. I would personally like to see The Colbert Report win. Stephen Colbert’s SuperPAC was brilliant to watch and really helped show the ridiculous of our current political campaigning rules.

Best Writing – Variety, Music or Comedy Special:
The 84th Annual Academy Awards
Betty White’s 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America’s Golden Girl
The Kennedy Center Honors
Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theatre
The 65th Annual Tony Awards

WILL WIN & SHOULD WIN: Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theatre

There’s really no need for commentary here. Comedians win this category a majority of the time. And when it’s not a comedian, it’s the Tony Awards. It’s basically a two-horse race. I think Louis C.K. will easily win. It was a much talked-about special and he’s got a lot of positive buzz coming his way. Plus It’ll be nice to see him accept an award on the main telecast, because he might not win any for his FX series Louie.

Best Directing – Variety, Music or Comedy Special:
The 84th Annual Academy Awards
The 54th Annual Grammy Awards
Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theatre
New York City Ballet: George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker (Live From Lincoln Center)
The 65th Annual Tony Awards

WILL WIN & SHOULD WIN: The 65th Annual Tony Awards

This one is a little difficult to predict. Comedy specials don’t really win this category and award shows haven’t won this category in a couple of years. That leaves the Live From Lincoln Center special, but I don’t know if that’ll take the victory. So I’m going to go with the Tony Awards for the win. It won the Special Class Program category and Glenn Weiss has won multiple times in the past. He’s looking good to add another one to the mantle
