Dancing with the Stars: 16.01 – “Week 2 Performances”

We’re back for the second week of performances for the 16th season of Dancing with the Stars. There was no elimination last week because it was the first performance show. But that changes this week. The first star will be elimination tomorrow night. Let’s see who is at risk for being the first one voted off the show.

Ingo Rademacher & Kym Johnson – “Billy-a-Dick” – Quickstep
The performances seem longer this week so far. Last week all of the routines seemed to be slightly shorter, but this dance seemed like a complete piece and wasn’t abruptly ended. I prefer more of the dancing and less of the manufactured drama of the rehearsal footage. This was a solid dance. Kym’s choreography was great and was the star of the entire piece. I wish Ingo had more of a personality that I could root for on this show. The judges enjoyed it but picked apart his shaky footwork but Carrie Ann blamed his frame more than his footwork. I think he’s safe for next week.

Dorothy Hamill & Tristan MacManus – “Chantilly Lace” – Jive
Dorothy had a solid first week and probably had my favorite performance of the first show. But she might be in trouble tonight because the rehearsal footage is showing her dealing with a pitched nerve/popped cyst on her ankle (I think, the editing was a little confused about what her ailment actually was). So her rehearsal time was compromised. It shows a little bit in the routine. Tristan does most of the work and Dorothy really struggles to keep up the pace. She’s also wearing flat shoes, probably easier on her feet. It was definitely a let down from her first number. She still gets a standing ovation from the audience (sympathy!). I’m sure people at home did the same thing and she’ll be around for another week of performances. The judges pointed the flaws and Dorothy took it in great stride.

Jacoby Jones & Karina Smirnoff – “Five Guys Named Moe” – Jazz
They definitely showed more personality in the rehearsal footage. He has fun with Karina and then he joins a class for children that she teaches (I’m not sure she teaches it weekly). Jacoby needed some help in the personality department because he didn’t come off so well in the first week. The routine is really fun but it’s very reminiscent of the one Karina did with J.R. Martinez when they were dressed as Newsies. Jacoby did a good job. He was off on a few movements and he stumbled a few times. The choreography and Karina really saved it from being as mediocre as it could have been.

Victor Ortiz & Lindsay Arnold – “Runaway Baby” – Jive
Can I be honest? I’m really losing interest in the show at this point. If I wasn’t recapping, I probably would’ve turned the channel by now. The rehearsal footage is really a drag. Victor is upset about not getting some of the moves and attempts to leave, but Lindsay convinces him to stay and they continue rehearsing. It didn’t seem honest or genuine at all. Once they came out, I completely changed my tune. The routine was really fun and bouncy. I love “Runaway Baby” so that really helped me get in the mood. It was fun and Victor seemed like he was into it. There was some mistakes but at least it was fun. Len points out that it wasn’t as neat and precise as he usually likes it.

Wynonna Judd & Tony Dovolani – “Neutron Dance” – Quickstep
I completely skipped the rehearsal footage. I was reading something and didn’t even pay attention. The dance starts almost exactly like Victor & Lindsay’s: a police siren. But this time Tony & Wynonna are police officers. It doesn’t make any sense. The dance should’ve been changed to the Slowstep because she was just walking through most of the dance. There wasn’t much dancing involved. It wasn’t very good IMO. The judges had some issues with it. Carrie Ann said she has great posture but she’s playing it too safe. And Len said that she’s the most entertaining and she can greatly improve on her dancing skills.

Zendaya Coleman & Val Chmerkovskiy – “The Head I Hold” – Jive
Zendaya was at the top of the leaderboard last week and she feels the pressure to continue to do well. She’s also very tall when she’s wearing heels. Google tells me that she’s 5’10” and she’s well over 6′ when she’s wearing heels. The routine is a little strange. I don’t like the song selection and the choreography is a little too messy. Zendaya was great though. She was more interesting to watch than Val and took all the attention away from him. Carrie Ann loved it by saying that Zendaya killed it. Len said she was fantastic. Bruno said that a star was born tonight. Obviously the judges are pulling for her this season.

Andy Dick & Sharna Burgess – “Poker Face” – Jazz
I think Andy Dick is keeping the entertainment and emotional factors alive this season. He starts off the rehearsal footage by saying that this was the first time he’s experienced an exorbitant amount of stress and didn’t drink. I’m really interested in his journey this season from foolish drunk to a man looking for redemption. It’s a fun routine with a Mad Hatter theme. His moves are much cleaner and crisper. There is also a Less Than Perfect reunion happening in the audience: Zachary Levi, Sherri Shepherd, Eric Roberts, Andrea Parker & Sara Rue are there to support him. Sherri was crying because she was so happy for him (but she’s also a camera whore and probably did it to get on TV too). The judges were a little mixed with their reactions. They thought it was entertaining but there were some technical issues with his performance.

Sean Lowe & Peta Murgatroyd – “(Let’s Get Movin’) Into Action” – Jive
The Bachelor guy is back. I find him incredibly boring and the rehearsal footage isn’t changing that. The routine was just as boring. The costumes and staging was really cheesy and it didn’t excite me at all. I don’t think he’ll be the first one eliminated but I hope he doesn’t make past the first few weeks.

Aly Raisman & Mark Ballas – “Jumpin Jack” – Quickstep
I actually forgot that Aly was on the show. I saw Mark and I couldn’t remember who he was paired with this season. Mark really wants her to come out of her shell and show a lot of personality for this dance. She took his advice and turned out a pretty fantastic routine. I can’t even remember what she did last week. She barely made an impression, but she completely transformed from last week and seemed much more committed to the style this week. Her & Mark make a great team. My biggest critique for Aly: lay off on the spray tanning. Even from the rehearsal footage from a few days, she looked more normal compared to the orange skin she was sporting tonight.

Lisa Vanderpump & Gleb Savchenko – “One Way or Another” – Jive
Lisa’s partner was disappointed with her performance. He said that was much better during the dress rehearsal than the actual live performance: so he’s pushing her harder this week to make sure she’s ready for the live show. The choreography isn’t very good here. She’s doing some weird hand motions that look awkward and could’ve been cutout to do something that looked more impressive. Maybe Gleb had to do that because it was the least objectionable move. Len said that it was wooden and wasn’t great. A middle of the road performance is dangerous on this show and I think Lisa could be in trouble of getting eliminated.

D.L. Hughley & Cheryl Burke – “It Don’t Mean a Thing” – Quickstep
D.L. had the lowest scores last week and he doesn’t want to be the first one to go home. D.L. is really resistant to the choreography and has conflict with his partner Cheryl. The routine itself is a slightly improvement over last week but it might be a case of too little, too late. I think I can see Cheryl mouthing the numbering of the choreography while they’re dancing. She’s not lip syncing to the song and she’s definitely telling him something. I can only assume that’s what she was doing.

Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough – “Lights” – Jazz
I have really had a turn around about Kellie Pickler because of this show. I hated her all those years ago on American Idol, but I really like her personality on here and she’s really a hard worker. She has the most pleasant rehearsal footage and picks up the choreography really well. I love Ellie Goulding’s “Lights”, so that adds another level of enjoyment to this performance. Derek’s choreography is unparalleled on this show. This routine was spectacular and the best of the season so far. I was worried the judges wouldn’t like it, but they gave it the best comments of the night.

OVERALL:
This was much more interesting than the season premiere. The first half dragged and I considered tuning out at one point, but the second half really kicked into gear. Kellie Pickler has surprisingly become my favorite now. Her “Lights” routine with Derek was spectacular. One of the best I’ve seen on the show.

Going home predictions: I think D.L. Hughley is a pretty safe bet. If he doesn’t go home then I can only attribute it to the fact that he went second-to-last in the performance order and that usually makes a difference. Dorothy Hamill & Lisa Vanderpump are also on the chopping block. They would make next on my list of possible casualties. You never know. Anything could happen…(Another Ellie Goulding reference. I love her!)
