Tony Nominations Announced: Kinky and Matilda and Pippin and Cinderella

*The nominations were announced this morning for the 67th Annual Tony Awards, which will be airing live on June 9th from Radio City Music Hall. Kinky Boots led the way with 13 nominations, followed by Matilda with 12, Pippin with 10, and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella with 9. I think that pretty much indicates who the frontrunners are for Best Musical and Best Revival. Those four shows are going to getting a bulk of the Musical awards. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

On the play side: revival Golden Boy received the most nominations with 8. The late Nora Ephron’s play Lucky Guy and Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike tied for second with 6 nominations each. It’s safe to say that those two will probably be battling it out to take home the top honor. In a big surprise: John Logan’s I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers didn’t get any nominations. Despite it’s rave reviews and the return of legend Bette Midler to the Broadway stage, it didn’t manage any nominations. Also, the one-woman show The Testament of Mary received a Best Play nomination, but not for its star Fiona Shaw (who also got rave reviews.) Sigourney Weaver was also the only cast member from Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike not to get nomination. That Best Actress in a Play category was ridiculously tough.

Here’s the full list of nominations….*
