Daytime Emmy Nominations Announced: Yes, They Still Exist

*It feels like we’re back in the middle of movie awards season again. Yesterday the Tony Awards announced their nominations and today the Daytime Emmys followed suit. The Daytime Emmys aren’t what they used to be, mostly because daytime television isn’t what it used to be either. There’s not enough relevant or quality programming to fill the airwaves, which makes honoring the best seem a little unusual. The show will be airing June 16th @ 8 P.M. on HLN (CNN’s Headline News). The fact that its airing on a random cable channel will tell you how far the awards have fallen.

Last year only 5 daytime dramas aired…and all 5 of them were nominated for Best Drama Series. One Life to Live was quite a surprise since it only aired 2 weeks of programming to be eligible. (The show left ABC airwaves on January 13th.) The Young and the Restless received the most nominations overall with 23, followed by General Hospital with 19, Days of Our Lives with 17, and The Bold and the Beautiful with 15. Sesame Street was the most nominated non-drama with 17 nominations. The Ellen DeGeneres Show was the most nominated talk show with 10 nominations.

Here’s the full list of nominations from the Emmy’s website. And here’s a select grouping of nominations announced this morning…*
