Emmy Predictions: Best Sound Mixing

I continue my series of Emmy predictions with the programs eligible in the categories for Best Sound Mixing (One-Hour Series, Half-Hour Series, TV Movie/Miniseries, Variety Program, and Non-Fiction Program). Let’s take a look at each one…

BEST SOUND MIXING – DRAMA OR COMEDY SERIES (ONE-HOUR):
Boardwalk Empire – “The Milkmaid’s Lot”
Breaking Bad – “Dead Freight”
Elementary – “The Deductionist”
Game of Thrones – “And Now His Watch Is Ended”
Homeland – “Beirut Is Back”

*Game of Thrones won this category last year and I expect it to be back. I would be surprised not to see Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and Homeland nominated. They have strong submissions and are big Emmy contenders this year. I’m going with Elementary for the final spot. They seem to go with a populist choice every year (Person of Interest, Burn Notice) and Elementary fits that mold. I could also see The Americans or Chicago Fire getting a nomination here.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: The Americans, Arrow, Burn Notice, Chicago Fire, Dexter, Downton Abbey, Glee, Hannibal, Mad Men, Person of Interest, True Blood, The Walking Dead]

BEST SOUND MIXING – COMEDY OR DRAMA SERIES (HALF-HOUR) OR ANIMATION:
Family Guy – “Yug Ylimaf”
Modern Family – “My Hero”
The Office – “Finale”
Parks and Recreation – “Leslie and Ben”
Raising Hope – “Burt Mitzvah: The Musical”

*Modern Family has been nominated for the last three years here and Parks and Recreation for the last two. Family Guy and The Office have received previous nominations and I expect them to return. Raising Hope had a musical episode this year and those usually do well in the Sound categories.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Archer, Arrested Development, Californication, Girls, House of Lies, How I Met Your Mother, The Middle, The Mindy Project, New Girl, Nurse Jackie, The Simpsons, 30 Rock, Veep]

BEST SOUND MIXING – TV MOVIE/MINISERIES:
American Horror Story: Asylum – “Welcome to Briarcliff”
Behind the Candelabra
The Bible
– “Beginnings”
The Hour – “Episode 6”
Parade’s End – “Part Four”

*These are the most likely contenders. Usually this category just goes for the big guns from the main one. They also tend to throw in a curve ball which is why I’m going with The Hour for the fifth spot.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, The Girl, Phil Spector, Political Animals, SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden, Top of the Lake]

BEST SOUND MIXING – VARIETY SERIES OR SPECIAL:
American Idol – “Finale”
The 55th Annual Grammy Awards
London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
The Oscars
2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

*This category usually goes with live programming and music specials. American Idol, the Grammys, and the Oscars always get nominated here. You can never bet against a technical nomination for the opening ceremony of the Olympics and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony won this category a couple of years ago. I would be surprised if any of these programs weren’t nominated. The only change on nomination morning will be the addition of a 6th nominee if a tie occurs.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: America’s Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars, The Kennedy Center Honors, One Singular Sensation! Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch (Live From Lincoln Center), Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel (Live From Lincoln Center), Saturday Night Live, The 66th Annual Tony Awards, The Voice]

BEST SOUND MIXING – NON-FICTION PROGRAMMING:
The Amazing Race – “Be Safe and Don’t Hit a Cow”
American Masters – “Inventing David Geffen”
Beyonce: Life Is But a Dream
Deadliest Catch
– “Mutiny on the Bering Sea”
The Dust Bowl – “The Great Plow Up”

*The Amazing Race and Deadliest Catch receive nominations every year. The category also likes to nominate documentaries/specials about musicians. Beyonce and the American Masters episode about David Geffen fit that mold perfectly. The last spot is a toss-up so I’m going to go with the trusty Ken Burns documentary to get the final slot.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: American Idol, Crossfire Hurricane, History of the Eagles, Manhunt: The Inside Story of the Hunt for Bin Laden, Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, North America, Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States, Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic, Survivor, Top Chef]
