Emmy Predictions: Best Technical Direction & Lighting Direction

I continue my series of Emmy predictions with the programs eligible in the categories for Best Technical Direction and Best Lighting Direction. Let’s take a look…

BEST TECHNICAL DIRECTION – SERIES:
The Big Bang Theory – “The Higgs Boson Observation”
Dancing with the Stars – “Episode 1610A”
Late Show with David Letterman – “#3829”
Saturday Night Live – “Martin Short”
The Voice – “Live Final Performances”

*Dancing with the Stars, David Letterman and Saturday Night Live have been consistently nominated every year and I don’t see that changing. The Big Bang Theory was nominated last year for an episode featuring Howard in space, and the episode they submitted this year deals with the same setting and technical aspects. American Idol usually gets nominated here, but The Voice has taken its place as America’s favorite singing competition. And I expect it to take some of its places in technical categories too.*

BEST TECHNICAL DIRECTION – SPECIAL:
The Kennedy Center Honors
London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
The Oscars
2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

*First of all, only 4 programs will be nominated here based on the lack of submitted programs. The Grammys usually get nominated but they didn’t even submit here. That leaves a spot open. The Kennedy Center Honors and The Oscars get nominated every year and I will predict the London opening games in every category I can. Great Performances has won this award the past two years, but they have quite a few contenders and I think that will spread the votes out, leaving none of the programs with a nomination.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Der Ring Des Nibelungen: Die Walkure (Great Performances at the Met), From Dust to Dreams: Opening Night at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, L’Elisir d’Amore (Great Performances at the Met), Louis C.K.: Oh My God, Rigoletto (Great Performances at the Met), Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show Starring Beyonce, The 66th Annual Tony Awards]

BEST LIGHTING DIRECTION – VARIETY SERIES:
Dancing with the Stars – “Episode 1605”
Jimmy Kimmel Live – “12-1776”
Saturday Night Live – “Martin Short”
So You Think You Can Dance – “Season 9 Finale”
The Voice – “The Live Show, Finals”

*This another category with a usual group of nominees. Dancing with the Stars, SNL and So You Think You Can Dance are consistently nominated. The Voice was nominated last year and I expect it to get another one. The last spot last year went to American Idol, but I can see a change coming. Jimmy Kimmel Live was nominated a couple of years ago and I think it will get back in again.*

BEST LIGHTING DIRECTION – VARIETY SPECIAL:
The 55th Annual Grammy Awards
London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
The Oscars
Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show Starring Beyonce
The 66th Annual Tony Awards

*The Grammys have won this award the past two years and The Oscars never miss a nomination. The Olympics opening ceremony won this category two years ago. Last year they nominated the Super Bowl Halftime Show and this year’s was even more impressive with its lighting direction. The last spot is up for grabs and I think the Tony Awards will take it.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Andrea Bocelli: Love in Portofino (Great Performances), The Kennedy Center Honors
Louis C.K.: Oh My God, One Singular Sensation! Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch (Live From Lincoln Center), 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel (Live From Lincoln Center), Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2012
