Emmy Predictions: Best Sound Editing and Stunt Coordination

I continue my series of Emmy predictions with the programs eligible in the categories for Best Sound Editing and Best Stunt Coordination. Let’s take a look….

BEST SOUND EDITING – SERIES:
Arrow – “Pilot”
Boardwalk Empire – “The Milkmaid’s Lot”
Breaking Bad – “Dead Freight”
Game of Thrones – “And Now His Watch Is Ended”
The Walking Dead – “Prey”

*Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead have always done well in the technical categories and have never missed a nomination in this specific one. I don’t see that changing. Breaking Bad has also been nominated numerous times and definitely deserve a return apperance for that episode. The last spot usually goes to a random CBS or CW show (previous nominees: CSI: Miami, Nikita, CSI: NY). I’m going with Arrow. The pilot was well received and it seems appealing to these types of voters.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: The Americans, Chicago Fire, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, Fringe, Hawaii Five-0, Homeland, Justified, Mad Men, NCIS, Nikita, Revolution, Southland, Spartacus: War of the Damned, Supernatural, True Blood, Vikings]

BEST SOUND EDITING – TV MOVIE, MINISERIES OR SPECIAL:
American Horror Story: Asylum – “Welcome to Briarcliff”
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome
The Bible
– “Beginnings”
Parade’s End – “Part Five”
SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden

*More of the usual suspects with a few new contenders thrown in the mix. Usually movies/miniseries not recognized in others will get nominations here. This is the best chance for Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome and SEAL Team Six to become Emmy nominees, and I think they will. But this is always difficult to predict because they either go for obvious choices or more subtle selections. This is a good mix of both.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Behind the Candelabra, Coldplay Live 2012, The Girl, Killing Lincoln, Phil Spector, Political Animals, 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, World Without End]

BEST SOUND EDITING – NON-FICTION PROGRAMMING:
The Amazing Race – “Be Safe and Don’t Hit a Cow”
American Masters – “Inventing David Geffen”
Crossfire Hurricane
The Dust Bowl
– “The Great Plow Up”
North America – “Born to Be Wild”

*Never count out The Amazing Race or Ken Burns from any category. They’re very likely to get in, as well as Discovery Channel’s North America. The category also likes to nominate documentaries based on musical acts. The David Geffen episode of American Masters and the HBO documentary about the Rolling Stones, Crossfire Hurricane fit that mold perfectly. There are other programs that fit that criteria also, so watch out for Beyonce: Life Is But a Dream or History of the Eagles to sneak in and take a spot.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Beyonce: Life Is But a Dream, Death and the Civil War (American Experience), 41, Henry Ford (American Experience), History of the Eagles, Manhunt: The Inside Story of the Hunt for Bin Laden, Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, The Men Who Built America, Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States, Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic, Survivor, Whale Wars, Witness]

BEST STUNT COORDINATION – DRAMA SERIES OR TV MOVIE/MINISERIES:
American Horror Story: Asylum
Boardwalk Empire
– “Margate Sands”
Game of Thrones – “Kissed by Fire”
Hawaii Five-0 – “Ohuna”
NCIS: Los Angeles – “Red, Parts 1 & 2”

*Apparently this year the Emmys have split the Stunt Coordination category into two separate ones: Drama or TV Movie/Miniseries and Comedy or Variety. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. This one is easier to predict because that’s what the Emmy voters usually nominated in previous years. I think these five are safe bets, but you can never be too sure with it. They have stunt reels on the Emmys FYC website, but you have to be a voter to gain access to it. There could be a great fight/action sequence in another contender that I don’t know about.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: The Americans, Arrow, The Bible, Breaking Bad, Burn Notice, Chicago Fire, Grimm, Homeland, Justified, NCIS, Nikita, Southland, Spartacus: War of the Damned, True Blood, Vikings, The Walking Dead]

BEST STUNT COORDINATION – COMEDY SERIES OR VARIETY PROGRAM:
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
The Middle
Modern Family
Real Husbands of Hollywood
Two and a Half Men

*This is a really random category. Comedy Series and Variety Programs are not especially known for their great action sequences or choreographed fights. It also says there will be 5 nominees despite only 16 programs submitting for consideration. This is a big shot in the dark. Anything can happen.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Austin & Ally, Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures, Cougar Town, House of Lies, How to Rock, iCarly, Mike & Molly, New Girl, Supah Ninjas, 30 Rock, Workaholics]
