Emmy Predictions: Best Costumes and Main Title Design

I continue my series of Emmy predictions with the programs eligible in the categories for Best Costumes and Best Main Title Design. Let’s take a look…

Boardwalk Empire – “Resolution”
The Borgias – “The Gunpowder Plot”
Downton Abbey – “Episode 4”
Game of Thrones – “Walk of Punishment”
Mad Men – “The Doorway”

*This category favors period/fantasy costumes above any other. Boardwalk Empire, The Borgias, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones should all easily return from last year. Mad Men was nominated every year except for last year. I think it will get back in over Once Upon a Time. If any show is at risk of not being nominated, I would say The Borgias. But I would be pretty surprised if this didn’t end up being the lineup on Emmy nomination morning.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: The Americans, Call the Midwife, The Carrie Diaries, Da Vinci’s Demons, Glee, The Good Wife, Gossip Girl, Hell on Wheels, House of Cards, Mr. Selfridge, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, Smash, Spartacus: War of the Damned, Vikings, The Walking Dead]

American Horror Story: Asylum – “Madness Ends”
Behind the Candelabra
The Girl
The Hour
– “Episode 1”
Parade’s End – “Part Three”

*Once again, look for the period and fantasy contenders to dominate the category. American Horror Story made it in last year for its season set in contemporary times, so it shouldn’t have any problems making it back in. In terms of winning: I would be shocked if Behind the Candelabra didn’t win for all of its work recreating Liberace’s most infamous costumes.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: The Bible, Killing Lincoln, Liz & Dick, Phil Spector, Political Animals, Restless, World Without End]

American Horror Story: Asylum
Behind the Candelabra
Parade’s End

*This category focuses on the design of the opening titles to a series/TV movie/miniseries/special. It is tough to predict since it’s always new nominees. The first season of American Horror Story was nominated last year. This year’s credits were a similar design and I think they’ll go for it again. HBO’s Behind the Candelabra and Parade’s End had memorable openings. Hannibal had a cool/creepy design element that fits with previous nominees/winners. And Vikings‘s opening credits were designed by the team from True Blood, which was nominated in 2009. Watch out for: The Americans and Top of the Lake.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: The Americans, Banshee, Bates Motel, Call the Midwife, Copper, Da Vinci’s Demons, Elementary, Hemlock Grove, House of Cards, Manhunt: The Inside Story of the Hunt for Bin Laden, The Newsroom, Person of Interest, Ripper Street, Teen Wolf, Top of the Lake]
