Emmy Predictions: Best Hairstyling and Makeup

I continue my series of Emmy predictions with the programs eligible in the categories for Best Hairstyling and Best Makeup (Non-Prosthetic and Prosthetic). Let’s take a look…

BEST HAIRSTYLING – SINGLE-CAMERA SERIES:
The Americans – “Pilot”
Boardwalk Empire – “Resolution”
Downton Abbey – “Episode 4”
Game of Thrones – “Second Sons”
Mad Men – “The Doorway”

*I’m going with the usual suspects for this category. Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and Mad Men have never missed a nomination, plus Downton Abbey won the category last year. I’m guessing that The Americans gets the final spot this year. Keri Russell wears a few wigs and that could lead Emmy voters to throw a couple of votes its way. Glee was nominated the first two seasons but missed out last year. I think it could be back again, just based on the lack of competition. If anything else gets in, it will be Portlandia.*

BEST HAIRSTYLING – MULTI-CAMERA SERIES OR SPECIAL:
The Big Bang Theory – “The Bakersfield Expedition”
Dancing with the Stars – “Episode 1608”
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon – “#777”
Saturday Night Live – “Jennifer Lawrence”
The Voice – “318A: The Live Shows, Part 1”

*Dancing with the Stars and SNL never miss out on nominations. The Voice was included here last year and its increased popularity this year only helps it. The specific episode of The Big Bang Theory featured the guys dressed up as characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s notable work will get noticed by the voters. For the final spot I’m going with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon…just because of the Downton Abbey sketch. Others to watch out for: the Olympics Opening Ceremony and the Oscars. Both are Emmy favorites but never get nominated for Hairstyling. That could possibly change.*

BEST HAIRSTYLING – TV MOVIE/MINISERIES:
American Horror Story: Asylum
Behind the Candelabra
The Girl

*Based on the lack of submissions this category will only have 3 nominees. American Horror Story won this category last year, while Behind the Candelabra and The Girl featured wig work based on iconic characters/people. They should all be safe. Watch out for Phil Spector…just based on the crazy hairstyle of Phil Spector’s appearance in the courtroom.*

BEST MAKEUP (NON-PROSTHETIC) – SINGLE-CAMERA SERIES:
Boardwalk Empire – “Resolution”
Game of Thrones – “Kissed by Fire”
Mad Men – “The Doorway”
Portlandia – “Alexandra”
The Walking Dead – “Sick”

*Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and Mad Men are always smart bets in the technical categories. They’ve each been nominated here every year they were eligible. That’s also been true for Glee, but I think we’ll see a decrease in its nominations this year. I’m thinking that Portlandia (for all of its different characters) and The Walking Dead (it has won in prosthetics for the past two years and I think it’ll finally get nominated for it’s non-prosthetic work also) will get the final two spots.*

BEST MAKEUP (NON-PROSTHETIC) – MULTI-CAMERA SERIES OR SPECIAL:
Dancing with the Stars – “Episode 1603”
How I Met Your Mother – “P.S. I Love You”
London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
Saturday Night Live
– “Justin Timberlake”
So You Think You Can Dance – “Season 9 Finale”

*This is a tough one. Dancing with the Stars and SNL are both locks once again. How I Met Your Mother has gotten in the past couple of years. I think it will again even if the submitted episode isn’t as impressive as others. The last two spots I’m guessing will go to the London opening ceremony and So You Think You Can Dance. I could see that changing though. It’s a toss-up.*

BEST MAKEUP (NON-PROSTHETIC) – TV MOVIE/MINISERIES:
American Horror Story: Asylum
Behind the Candelabra
The Bible
– “Passion”

*Once again because of the lack of submissions in this category, there will only be three nominees. American Horror Story and Behind the Candelabra are pretty much sure things. I’m guessing this will change from the Hairstyling category by nominating The Bible over The Girl. But I could see a repeat also.*

BEST PROSTHETIC MAKEUP – SERIES, TV MOVIE, MINISERIES OR SPECIAL:
American Horror Story: Asylum
Game of Thrones
– “Valar Dohaeris”
Grimm – “Bad Teeth”
Once Upon a Time – “In the Name of the Brother”
The Walking Dead – “This Sorrowful Life”

*I think this category will be a repeat of last year…at least four of the nominees. The Walking Dead has won this category the past two years and I would be shocked if it didn’t get another trophy. I’m predicting Grimm for the final spot. There’s usually a random show nominated every year and Grimm is known for its intricate monster/creature makeups (which is what this category usually goes for).*
