Emmy Predictions: Best Guest Actor & Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

I continue my series of Emmy predictions with the people eligible in the categories for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series and Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. I’m going to take a look at the categories and make groupings: Tier One, Tier Two and Tier Three. Tier One placements are for people/programs that I fully expect to get an Emmy nomination. Tier Two are people/programs that are still in the running but could be left out. And Tier Three are people/programs that I don’t expect to be nominated, but they would be a little bit of a surprise. Let’s take a look at the categories…

BEST GUEST ACTOR – COMEDY SERIES:
TIER ONE:
Bob Newhart, The Big Bang Theory
Martin Short, Saturday Night Live
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live

*Justin Timberlake has won this award twice for his guest hosting appearance. I would be shocked if he didn’t win a 3rd one, let alone get a nomination. Martin Short is a respected actor and had one of the strongest SNL episodes this year. And Bob Newhart is a TV legend on one of the biggest shows on television. That’s a recipe for a nomination. He still won’t win as long as JT is nominated.*

TIER TWO:
Will Arnett, 30 Rock
Matthew Broderick, Modern Family
Louis C.K., Saturday Night Live
Nathan Lane, Modern Family
Bruno Mars, Saturday Night Live
James Marsden, 30 Rock
Rob Reiner, New Girl
Fred Willard, Modern Family
Patrick Wilson, Girls
Henry Winkler, Arrested Development

*This is a very competitive category this year. I can see any combination of three guys from this list taking the last spots in the category. Will Arnett has been nominated 4 out of 6 times for his role on 30 Rock. Will they give him a goodbye nomination? James Marsden is also in the mix from the same show. Modern Family has gotten a spot for the past three years, including one for contender Nathan Lane. I think Fred Willard has the best shot because of the finale, but it sounds like he submitted an episode where he only appeared on Skype. You can never count out an SNL host from receiving a nomination. Louis C.K. & Bruno Mars both had impressive hosting gigs. But will SNL will take 3 or 4 spots in the category? Rob Reiner has a couple of Emmys on his shelf and he was pretty memorable on New Girl this seaosn. Patrick Wilson had one of the most talked about guest appearances on the past year. But will Girls be able to break through in other categories? And Henry Winkler is an Emmy favorite who appeared in quite a few episodes of AD this year. I think he’s a very strong possibility.*

TIER THREE:
Bobby Cannavale, Nurse Jackie
Matt Damon, House of Lies
Dennis Farina, New Girl
Kevin Hart, Saturday Night Live
David Lynch, Louie
Garry Marshall, Louie
Mike O’Malley, Glee
Patton Oswalt, Parks and Recreation
Peter Scolari, Girls
Martin Sheen, Anger Management
Robin Williams, Louie

*While I’m not predicting any of these people, the Emmys do some strange things in the guest categories sometimes so it wouldn’t completely surprise me to see any of these names slip through the cracks and appear on the Emmy list on July 18th.*

FINAL PREDICTIONS:
Will Arnett, 30 Rock
Louis C.K., Saturday Night Live
Bob Newhart, The Big Bang Theory
Martin Short, Saturday Night Live
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live
Henry Winkler, Arrested Development

*I decided to go with Arnett, C.K. and Winkler for the final three spots. Will Arnett has been nominated 4 times previously and I think his body of work this TV season (Up All Night, 30 Rock, Arrested Development) will get him noticed somewhere. This is his best chance. Louis C.K. has become an Emmy favorite and SNL hosts usually do well in the category. And Henry Winkler is a beloved TV icon and one of the most liked characters on the show. He doesn’t have a tape to win but the nomination will be victory enough.*

BEST GUEST ACTRESS – COMEDY SERIES:
TIER ONE:
Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live

*The two SNL ladies are the only two names that I completely expect to see nominated next Thursday. McCarthy had another great hosting job and the success of The Heat only helps her chances. Kristen Wiig was nominated the past 4 years in the Supporting category. Now that’s she in Guest with lesser competition, she could possibly pick up her first trophy.*

TIER TWO:
Elizabeth Banks, Modern Family
Georgia Engel, Hot in Cleveland
Kate Hudson, Glee
Dot-Marie Jones, Glee
Melissa Leo, Louie
Liza Minnelli, Arrested Development
Sarah Jessica Parker, Glee
Parker Posey, Louie
Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock

*Glee usually does well in this category, but its fading status as a popular show isn’t going to help it’s chances. Dot-Marie Jones has been nominated the past two years. But she was less of a presence on the show this year and doesn’t have a worthy tape. Kate Hudson & Sarah Jessica Parker’s performance were both met with mixed reviews. That doesn’t always mean anything though. It’ll be interesting to see if the Emmys embrace Louie this year. If they do, expect Melissa Leo & Parker Posey to be swept up in the nomination totals. Elizabeth Banks was previously nominated the past two years for 30 Rock. Maybe they’ll still check off her name now that’s a contender for Modern Family. Liza Minnelli is a respected icon and had a very prominent role on Arrested Development, she’s very much in the mix. And even though Hot in Cleveland has fallen off the radar slightly, Georgia Engel was practically supporting and that type of role usually does well.*

TIER THREE:
Paget Brewster, Modern Family
Isla Fisher, Arrested Development
Carla Gugino, New Girl
Regina King, The Big Bang Theory
Shelley Long, Modern Family
Chloe Grace Moretz, 30 Rock
Kristen Schaal, 30 Rock
Chloe Sevigny, Louie
Octavia Spencer, 30 Rock

*While I’m not predicting any of these people, the Emmys do some strange things in the guest categories sometimes so it wouldn’t completely surprise me to see any of these names slip through the cracks and appear on the Emmy list on July 18th.*

FINAL PREDICTIONS:
Elizabeth Banks, Modern Family
Kate Hudson, Glee
Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
Liza Minnelli, Arrested Development
Parker Posey, Louie
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live

*Even though Glee is fading, Kate Hudson’s role is the type that Emmy voters usually go for so I expect her to be nominated. Elizabeth Banks had a decent role on the Emmy favorite Modern Family and that’s enough to get her three nominations in a row in this category. The last two were hard to predict. I think Liza is in the same boat as Henry Winkler. She’s respected and she was borderling supporting on AD. The only drawback is it’s still unclear how the Emmy voters will embrace Netflix and the return of Arrested Development. And I think Parker Posey’s performance was good enough and got enough attention that she’ll get a well deserved nomination.*
