Emmy Predictions: Best Picture Editing

I continue my series of Emmy predictions with the programs eligible in the categories for Best Picture Editing. Let’s take a look…

Breaking Bad – “Dead Freight”
Downton Abbey – “Episode 1”
Game of Thrones – “The Rains of Castamere”
Homeland – “The Choice”
The Newsroom – “We Just Decided To”

*The most difficult part of predicting the Editing categories is making sure you predict the right episode. Each show submits multiple episodes and it’s difficult to know which ones Emmy voters are going to go with. Looking at previous nominees and contenders, it’s really difficult to know which episode they’re going to go for. Homeland won this category last year and I think they have a good chance of winning it again. Breaking Bad and Downton Abbey have been nominated previously. Game of Thrones hasn’t been nominated here yet but I think that will change. And even though Mad Men has been nominated every year, I think it will be left off this year in favor of The Newsroom.*

Arrested Development – “Flight of the Phoenix”
Modern Family – “Goodnight Gracie”
Modern Family – “Party Crasher”
The Office – “Finale”
30 Rock – “Hogcock!/Last Lunch”

*Last year this category had 5 nominees with only 3 shows represented: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Modern Family and 30 Rock. CYE is not eligible this year, so count on MF & 30 Rock for return appearances. Arrested Development received nominations every year during their original run. They only submitted one episode and I think that increases their chances. The Office hasn’t been nominated here in a while, but I think it’s superb finale with make it back in the fold.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: Family Guy, Girls, Glee, House of Lies, Louie, The Mindy Project, New Girl, Nurse Jackie, Parks and Recreation, Veep]

The Big Bang Theory – “The Love Spell Potential”
Hot in Cleveland – “Magic Diet Candy”
How I Met Your Mother – “P.S. I Love You”
Two and a Half Men – “My Bodacious Vidalia”
2 Broke Girls – “And the Broken Hip”

*I think this category will be an exact repeat of the lineup from last year. I don’t think anything new will be able to break through here. The Colbert Report or Conan could possibly take a spot, but I’m not sure why they’re included here in the first place.*

American Horror Story: Asylum – “Madness Ends”
American Horror Story: Asylum – “Nor’easter”
Behind the Candelabra
Political Animals
– “Pilot”
Top of the Lake – “Episode Five”

*This category usually goes for the usual contenders. Political Animals and Top of the Lake won’t get much love from the other technical categories, so that should make them pretty safe here. I suspect AHS will get two nominations and Behind the Candelabra is always a lock for anything.*

The Colbert Report – “#8148” – The Colbert Bump
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart – “#18092” – Australia & Gun Control’s Aftermath, Part 3
Jimmy Kimmel Live – “#13-1832” – Movie: The Movie 2V
Louis C.K.: Oh My God
2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

*The Induction ceremony won last year, so I expect it to be back. Louis C.K. was also nominated last year and Jimmy Kimmel Live was frequently nominated in the past. It’s never a bad idea to go with Colbert & Stewart in any category. The only question is which segment will be nominated for them. The Oscars are always nominated, but their montage selections weren’t impressive and I don’t think the voters will waste a space on them this year.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Shirley MacLaine, America’s Got Talent, Coldplay Live 2012, Dancing with the Stars, The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards, The Kennedy Center Honors, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Late Show with David Letterman, London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, The Oscars, Paul McCartney’s Live Kisses (Great Performances), Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel (Live From Lincoln Center), Saturday Night Live, The Voice]

American Masters – “Mel Brooks: Make a Noise”
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown – “Libya”
Henry Ford (American Experience)
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God

*American Masters and Anthony Bourdain have been nominated the past two years. I don’t expect that to change. Usually documentaries fill up the other three spots. I think the three main contenders will each take a spot. Other contenders: I could see Beyonce’s documentary/concert film sneaking in and Beyond Scared Straight could make a return appearance. Anything can happen.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: The Abolitionists (American Experience), Beyonce: Life Is But a Dream, Beyond Scared Straight, Crossfire Hurricane, Death and the Civil War (American Experience), The Dust Bowl, 41, Manhunt: The Inside Story of the Hunt for Bin Laden, North America, Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States, Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic, Vice, Witness, The World According to Dick Cheney]

The Amazing Race – “Be Safe and Don’t Hit a Cow”
Deadliest Catch – “Mutiny on the Bering Sea”
Project Runway – “Europe, Here We Come”
Survivor – “Zipping Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”
Top Chef – “Glacial Gourmand”

*This category has been the same for the past two years and I don’t expect it to change. There isn’t anything new that seems like it could break through this solid lineup. The only wrench I can see is Whale Wars. It switched technical categories from Non-Fiction to Reality. But even on the other side it wasn’t nominated the last couple of years. If anything replaces one of the nominees or makes it a category with 6…it will be Whale Wars.*

[ALSO IN CONTENTION: All-Star Celebrity Apprentice, America’s Got Talent, Antiques Roadshow, The Glee Project, Intervention, Masterchef, MythBusters, So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef Masters, The Voice, Whale Wars]
