Emmy Winner Predictions 2013: Best Special Visual Effects

The Emmys are less than one month away…so it’s best to start predicting. I’m going to take a look at each category and predict who I think will be taking home the lovely Emmy statue on Sept. 15 (Creative Arts) or Sept. 22 (Primetime telecast).

Best Special Visual Effects:
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome
– “Pilot”
Falling Skies – “Worlds Apart”
Game of Thrones – “Valar Dohaeris”
Hemlock Grove – “Children of the Night”
Last Resort – “Captain”

*The visual effects categories got changed around last year. Instead of separating it by series and TV movie/miniseries, they now have just Special Effects and Special Effects in a Supporting Role. I guess it makes sense but I don’t really get the difference between the two. This category has a long history of nominating effects-driven series in the sci-fi genre. However, they rarely ever win. The Syfy shows and Falling Skies should be happy with the noms. Hemlock Grove is more horror and has the prestige factor of being on Netflix. Last Resort is a cancelled ABC series, but it’s effects were one of the most praised things about it. This should be an easy win for Game of Thrones though. It’s well liked and they spend a lot of money to make sure the effects look better than anything else on television.*

Best Special Visual Effects in a Supporting Role:
Banshee – “Pilot”
Boardwalk Empire – “The Pony”
The Borgias – “The Prince”
Da Vinci’s Demons – “The Lovers”
Revolution – “Pilot”
Vikings – “Dispossessed”

*Based on the nominees, it seems like this category basically nominates things that use effects to generate complex background images and enchance the scenery. That’s just my guess. Boardwalk Empire has won for its effects the previous two years (the first season win was most impressive because it was up against more effects-driven series). So it shouldn’t have a problem winning a third one. Vikings seems to be the biggest threat. It got more technical nominations than expected so maybe the voters like it more than anybody will expect.*
