Emmy Winner Predictions 2013: Best Costumes

The Emmys are only a few weeks away…so it’s best to start predicting. I’m going to take a look at each category and predict who I think will be taking home the lovely Emmy statue on Sept. 15 (Creative Arts) or Sept. 22 (Primetime telecast).

Best Costumes – Series:
Boardwalk Empire – “Resolution”

The Borgias – “The Gunpowder Plot”
Downton Abbey – “Episode 4”
Game of Thrones – “Walk of Punishment”
Once Upon a Time – “Queen of Hearts”

*This is the exact same lineup of nominees from last year. Game of Thrones won last year. While it could happen again, I’m going to go with a surprise here and say that Boardwalk Empire takes it. I’ve talked about it a few times in the previous predictions post (holy alliteration!), but there’s a really impressive New Year’s Eve party in the Boardwalk Empire that is a great showcase for all of the show’s technical achievements. I think it’s going to be enough to tip the scales in favor of a win here.*

Best Costumes – TV Movie/Miniseries:
American Horror Story: Asylum – “Madness Ends”
Behind the Candelabra
The Girl
Killing Lincoln
Parade’s End
– “Part 3”
Phil Spector

*The last three years a period costume piece from Masterpiece Theatre has won this award: Return to Cranford, Downton Abbey and Great Expectations. That’s definitely going to change because it didn’t earn any nominations this year. The program that best fits that mold is Parade’s End. But that did less well than hoped in the nomination tally, so I don’t think voters really liked that program. This will probably be another easy win for Behind the Candelabra, especially with all the impressive recreations of Liberace’s most famous costumes.*

Best Costumes – Variety Program or Special:
The 55th Annual Grammy Awards
The Men Who Built America
– “Bloody Battles”
Portlandia – “Blackout”

*Easiest to predict! This is a juried award and the winners were announced a few weeks ago.*
