Emmy Winner Predictions 2013: Best Reality Host & Reality Program

The Emmys are only a few weeks away…so it’s best to start predicting. I’m going to take a look at each category and predict who I think will be taking home the lovely Emmy statue on Sept. 15 (Creative Arts) or Sept. 22 (Primetime telecast).

Best Host – Reality or Reality-Competition Program:
Tom Bergeron, Dancing with the Stars

Anthony Bourdain, The Taste
Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance
Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn, Project Runway
Ryan Seacrest, American Idol
Betty White, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers

*Jeff Probst had a hold on this category for the first four years. They dropped him off the nominations last year and gave Tom Bergeron the trophy. I think he’ll win it again this year. He’s got some tough competition though. We can count out Anthony Bourdain (who is essentially a judge) and Ryan Seacrest (who I think just gets nominated because of lazy voters). Betty White is a beloved TV icon, but she isn’t really known for her hosting capabilities on this show. She could win if they vote based on her name alone. Heidi Klum made it back in the lineup because she’s credited with Tim Gunn now. Gunn is the most beloved figure on the show and everyone loves him. But people may be over the show and will just be happy to see the nomination. Cat Deeley is my favorite host on television, but I do here mixed reactions on her from people who don’t regularly watch the show. Too divisive to win. That leaves Tom Begeron. Everyone likes him and he’s one of the bright spots on the show. He submitted the episode that aired the day of the Boston bombings and that’s going to help him stand out from the rest of the competition. He should easily win another one.*

Best Reality Program:
Antiques Roadshow
Deadliest Catch
Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives
MythBusters
Shark Tank
Undercover Boss

*This is Antiques Roadshow‘s 9th consecutive nomination and MythBusters‘ 5th consecutive nomination. I really just hope one of them will pull out an upset win just to put them out of their misery. I don’t think that will happen though. The category tends to favor feel-good inspirational shows or Deadliest Catch. Unfortunately for everyone else, Deadliest Catch was nominated this year and will likely win. The show is beloved by the Emmy voters and it’s still one of the most watched cable television series. The biggest competitor is Shark Tank. That does very well on ABC and has only gained in popularity every year. But I don’t think it will hold up to something with higher production values like Deadiest Catch.*
