Emmy Winner Predictions 2013: Best Guest Actor & Actress in a Comedy Series

The Emmys are only a few weeks away…so it’s best to start predicting. I’m going to take a look at each category and predict who I think will be taking home the lovely Emmy statue on Sept. 15 (Creative Arts) or Sept. 22 (Primetime telecast).

Best Guest Actor – Comedy Series:
Bobby Cannavale, Nurse Jackie
Louis C.K., Saturday Night Live
Will Forte, 30 Rock
Nathan Lane, Modern Family
Bob Newhart, The Big Bang Theory
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live

*Finally we can start talking about some acting categories! Let’s count out two nominees right away: Will Forte & Nathan Lane. Both of them should just be happy with their nominations, sit back and enjoy the show. I would be absolutely shocked if either of them walked away with the trophy. Bobby Cannavale seems like a long shot also. He wasn’t as featured as he was last season, but the fact that he was nominated again (and for Boardwalk Empire) means that he’s an Emmy favorite. It wouldn’t surprise me if he won…but he’s a distant fourth. The same also applies to Louis C.K. His reviews as a host on SNL were mixed…but the fact that he was nominated so many times this year means that the Emmy voters can’t get enough of him. The love could carry over to this category. But ultimately it will come down to a race between Bob Newhart & Justin Timberlake (who would’ve thought those two be battling it out over an acting Emmy?). Bob Newhart has never won an Emmy before. He’s nominated for a very popular show and had a very sympathetic/heartfelt character. This could finally win him an award. However, I think Justin Timberlake will pick up his third Emmy for his hosting duties at SNL. This episode was better than his first two wins. He’s got the five-timers club sketch, he gets to perform two songs, etc. He’s got a lot of episode to work with and that’s going to seem much more impressive compared to the other nominees. I also think the VMA performance during the voting period is going to earn him more votes than he would’ve gotten before. I feel very comfortable predicting him here.*

Winner Prediction: Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live

Best Guest Actress – Comedy Series:
Dot-Marie Jones, Glee
Melissa Leo, Louie
Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
Molly Shannon, Enlightened
Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live

*I’ll do the same as I did above. I’m going to count out Dot-Marie Jones & Molly Shannon right from the beginning. Both of them are great actresses but they don’t stand a chance here. Elaine Stritch has been consistently nominated here for her role on 30 Rock. This is their last chance to award her. It’s possible but not likely to happen. It’s going to be a three person race between Leo, McCarthy & Wiig. Even though SNL hosts do fairly well on the Drama side…no female has been able to break through since Tina Fey in 2009. Kristen Wiig has been nominated every year since 2009 (in the supporting category) and wasn’t able to win. She’s now nominated for her guest hosting duty and the lesser competition could finally bring her a long overdue Emmy trophy. But her episode has very mixed reactions and some felt it was too early for her to return to the show. Melissa McCarthy had another fantastic episode this year…but if she wasn’t able to win last year (to Kathy Bates on Two and a Half Men) will she be able to this year? And Melissa Leo is the wildcard. If they completely reject the SNL ladies then she is the next best bet. But her performance could be a little off-putting to some of the older voters. I’m going to go with Melissa McCarthy for the win. I think her episode was strong enough and the box-office success of The Heat this summer is going to give her something a little extra to push her to her second Emmy win.*

Winner Prediction: Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
