Emmy Winner Predictions 2013: Best Variety Series

The Emmys are less than a week away! This week I’m going to be taking a look at all of the major categories being handed out on Sunday night. Now that the Creative Arts Emmys were held on Sunday, it should be slightly easier to predict who will win. Let’s take a look….

Best Variety, Music or Comedy Series:
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Real Time with Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live

*The Daily Show has a hold on this category since 2003. It’s won 10 years in a row. Something tells me that this year could bring some change. One of the major factors could be that Jon Stewart took the summer off to go direct a film. He wasn’t on his show during the key times voters are likely watching the show. The Colbert Report has seemed like the next natural successor. It has won the Writing category twice, breaking The Daily Show‘s streak in that category. Maybe now is its time to shine? I would also look out for Jimmy Kimmel Live. It made some major impact this year by moving to the 11:30 timeslot. It also received nominations in both writing and directing. Voters have warmed up to it. And SNL is always a contender. It had a pretty good year and racked up quite a few wins on Sunday night for its technical aspects. With all of that being said…I think voters will still end up going with The Daily Show for win #11.*

Winner Prediction: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Best Writing – Variety, Music or Comedy Series:
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Portlandia
Real Time with Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live

*This is the place where I think The Daily Show won’t win this year. This is the category that has switched it up a couple of times. That will more than likely happen this year, I just have a feeling. The Colbert Report has won this award twice and this should be its third time. All though this category could be a harbinger of things to come. If The Daily Show wins…then it will definitely win the main category. But if it goes to The Colbert Report or even SNL (which submitted the Justin Timberlake episode, I assume) win, then series could be going to something different.*

Winner Prediction: The Colbert Report

Best Directing – Variety, Music or Comedy Series:
The Colbert Report – “#8131” – James Hoskinson
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart – “#17153” – Chuck O’Neil
Jimmy Kimmel Live – “13-1810” – Andy Fisher
Late Show with David Letterman – “#3749” – Jerry Foley
Portlandia – “Alexandra” – Jonathan Krisel
Saturday Night Live – “Justin Timberlake” – Don Roy King

*SNL has won this award the past three years and I don’t expect that to change. All of the other shows have been nominated multiple times and have never won. Maybe if voters want to switch it up, they could. But SNL submitted their best episode of the season. I don’t see that changing. If there is a possible dark horse I would guess that Jimmy Kimmel Live is next in line. It does a lot of sketch work and pre-recorded segments that voters would probably favor in a category like this.*

Winner Prediction: Saturday Night Live – “Justin Timberlake” – Don Roy King
