Primetime Emmy Awards 2013: Surprising Winners During a Boring Ceremony

The 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held last night and there were definitely some surprising winners in almost every category. Breaking Bad picked up its first Drama Series winner over heavily favored Homeland. Jeff Daniels & Bobby Cannavale pulled two of the biggest upsets of all time in the drama acting categories. Modern Family took home its fourth win in a row for Comedy Series, despite their only other win being for Directing. The supporting comedy categories were expected to go to MF but instead went to Tony Hale for Veep and Merritt Wever for Nurse Jackie (two huge surprises again).

The ceremony itself was a complete mess. Neil Patrick Harris is usually a very professional host but even he couldn’t save the show. The show insists on grouping genres together, so they do all the comedy categories then all of the drama, etc. But this year they managed to sandwich in a random TV Movie category into the middle of the show before giving the rest of them out 90 minutes later. The In Memoriam segments didn’t work either. They completely brought down the excitement of the show and put a somber mood on the entire evening.

Let’s forgot about this year and hope for a better one next year….
