A Gentleman’s Guide to the Tony Awards: Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 68th Annual Tony Awards were announced this morning. The musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder lead the field with 10 nominations. Behind that Hedwig and the Angry Inch received 8 nominations and After Midnight and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical both got 7 each. Definitely an interesting morning. Beautiful did much better than anybody expected, which is a good thing for Jessie Mueller. She looks to be a frontrunner in Actress in a Musical now. Speaking of that category, one of the biggest surprises of the morning was the snub of Michelle Williams for Cabaret. She was a threat to possibly win and she didn’t even make the Top 5. Another big snub was Marin Mazzie for Bullets Over Broadway. Many thought this could’ve possibly been the role for the Broadway diva to finally win the Tony.

The Play side was also interesting. The revivals this year were much stronger than the original shows and the nominations proved that. The Glass Menagerie and Twelfth Night lead the field with 7 nominations each. They really loved Twelfth Night too, giving 4 acting nominations including 3 in the Featured Actor in a Play category. The Cripple of Inishmaan also did well with 6 nominations but failed to garner one for its leading man Daniel Radcliffe. The revivals also took up all of the Directing slots. Not one of the original productions this year managed to break into that category, which means that it’s completely up for grabs.

Here’s the full list of nominations…
