Golden Globes 2016: Nominee Predictions

The Golden Globe nominations will be revealed on Thursday morning. The Globes are a little more predictable than the SAGs because they love star power more than anything else. Every once in a while they throw a curveball and nominate someone completely unexpected. That could happen this year, but I don’t know who it could possibly be. The television is a little more unpredictable. They love first season shows, but they also seem a little averse to the streaming networks (Amazon, Hulu, Netflix). Those three have a lot of new shows for them to consider, but they have a hill to climb.

Golden Globe Predictions 2015: Early Picks

It’s still a little early to do Golden Globe predictions, but that didn’t stop me from doing them. As usual, I’m sure there will be last minute switches in genre (example: American Hustle switching to Comedy/Musical at the absolute last possible second). So these are preliminary of course. I feel more confident with the Televison categories, but once again anything can happen between now and when the nominations are announced in December.

Golden Globe Nominations Announced: Big Surprises on Nomination Morning

The movie nominations were slightly surprising. Nobody expected Philomena or Rush to get Picture nominations on the Drama side, especially over Lee Daniels’ The Butler (which couldn’t even get a nomination for Oprah Winfrey). Some big shifts have happened in those categories. Captain Phillips did better than expected also. Greengrass in Director and Abdi in Supporting are huge boosts to their campaign. And American Hustle continues to dominate in almost every category. It could be a quiet darkhorse that takes the Oscar in a couple of months.

On the television side, the big news is that Homeland was completely shut out of the nominations. It swept the top drama category two years in a row, Claire Danes won the past two years, and Damian Lewis picked up one last year. This year…not even a nomination. Pretty shocking. Otherwise it was a predictable group of nominees. Brooklyn Nine-Nine fared the best out of the new comedies, although I would’ve rather seen Andre Braugher nominated in the acting category instead of Samberg.

Tina Fey & Amy Poehler Host Globes

Golden Globes: Best Show in Years
The 70th Annual Golden Globes were held on Sunday and it turned out to be the best Golden Globes ceremony I’ve ever watched. Tina Fey & Amy Poehler set the show up on the right note with their uproarious opening monologue. Taking shots at people while still being upbeat and liked by the room. The best joke came at the expense of Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow. Amy: “When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.” Hilarious. They also had another great gag where they added themselves as factor actors to the Actor & Actress TV Movie/Miniseries categories as the stars of the made for television movie: Dog President. (Note to network executives: please make that movie for real.) Jodie Foster received the Cecil B. DeMille award (basically a lifetime achievement) and gave a speech that was beyond fascinating. She touched on her career, the media’s portrayal of her sexuality, reality television and even a coded message to her ailing mother. It was interesting to say the least.

In terms of the winners, they got it mostly right. I was very happy to see Girls pick up two awards for Comedy Series & Actress for Lena Dunham. Dunham gave two great speeches and even thanked Chad Lowe (a dig at Hilary Swank forgetting her husband in her Oscar speech). Homeland swept the Drama side but somehow didn’t manage to get Mandy Patinkin a win.

On the film side, Argo picked up wins for Picture Drama & Director. I would say it’s the definite frontrunner for the Oscar…but let’s not forget that Affleck was snubbed in Director there. If Affleck also picks up the DGA award, that Director race is going to be insane. Daniel Day-Lewis picked up another win and virtually sealed up that third Oscar. Jessica Chastain & Jennifer Lawrence both won Actress again, keeping it split. SAG & BAFTA should clear up that race, but there’s also Emmanuelle Riva to consider at the Oscars. Christoph Waltz threw a major wrench into Supporting Actor with his win tonight. The precursors have been split all over the place in that category. Waltz isn’t even nominated for SAG so that won’t help anybody. Anne Hathaway won another Supporting Actress and is the safest bet to win the Oscar next to Daniel Day-Lewis. The Oscar race is still pretty open in every other category and that makes things more interesting.

Golden Globe Nominations Announced: Things Just Got Interesting

It’s been a busy week for Awards Season. Today the Golden Globe nominations were announced and it made the race much more interesting. Most important revelation of the day: Nicole Kidman is a much bigger factor than anybody had anticipated. She picked up another nomination here for The Paperboy and I would put her ahead of Amy Adams for a nomination at this point. She’s getting a lot of attention right now, when it counts the most. Another big point: Tom Hooper was snubbed in Director for Les Miserables. Maybe that film isn’t as much of a Best Picture frontrunner as we had suspected. Also: Beasts of the Southern Wild got 0 nominations between yesterday and today. It wasn’t as much of a surprise yesterday because of some eligibility technicality at the SAGs, but it needed at least one nom today to stay a serious contender. It looks pretty shaky now.
